Tranby House was built by Joseph Hardey who arrived at the Swan River Colony (now Western Australia) in February 1839. It is the oldest property vested in the National Trust and is the oldest inhabitated house (farmhouse).

Tranby is situated on the Swan River and is surrounded by massive oak trees brought out from England by the Hardey family on the brig "Tranby". Along the river banks are large black olive trees, from saplings picked up in South Africa en route to the Swan River Colony.

Within Tranby House are items of furniture also brought out on the brig by Hardey and Clarkson families. The flooring is a pit sawn Jarrah, grown on the property and the bricks used in the partial construction were "burnt" adjacent to Tranby House.
