In October 1987 the Welcome Home Parade for Vietnam War Veterans in Sydney demonstrated the massive out pouring of acceptance and public support for those who served in Australia's longest war.
That parade which honoured those 503 service men who lost their lives sparked an interest in the Western Australia community to honour our fallen comrades in some permanent form.
The Memorial Pavilion, situated in the children's playground just off May Drive, is the culmination of the efforts of those who took up the challenge.
The Pavilion itself was originally built in 1899 for the Karrakatta Cemetary Board at a cost of 315 pounds and served for many years as a chapel and later as a place of peace and solitude. The Memorial Tablets have been laid in what was the old chapel's sanctuary, and have been secured by a pair of wrought iron gates which originated from the entrance to the Western Australian Museum.
The central pieces of stone display the names of 61 sons of Western Australia who, when called upon made, the supreme sacrifice and this pavilion has been reconstructed in their honour. It was dedicated on 1st October 1989, two years after the Welcome Home Parade.
