Out and About

MARYBOROUGH

Nestled in a curve of the Mary River lies Maryborough, a City of contrast, the cultural and historic centre of the Fraser Coast.

Maryborough Heritage Gateway/Customs House - Wharf Street
Built in 1901 and opened as a museum in 2001 as part of the Heritage Trails Network. Modern technology takes you back to an era long ago. Delight in the displays depicting local history, the early settlers and the industries they created which formed the region’s economic backbone.

Bond Store - Wharf Street
This museum has been operating since 1993 and illustrates the history of the Port of Maryborough and how the city developed around the port. The Museum holds several displays depicting early immigration. The Bond Store building is an excellent example of a mid-Victorian warehouse.

Brennan & Geraghty’s Store Museum - Lennox Street
Take a peek into the good old days. The museum is a virtual time capsule of more than 100 years of merchandising, dating back to 1871. The store includes unsold stocks of curry powder from the 1890s through to toilet paper from the fifties.

Rosehill Homestead - Rosehill Road
This delightful home, built in 1859 of handmade clay bricks, is furnished with antiques. Overlooking the Mary River, enjoy a tour of the homestead and taste the delicious homemade Devonshire Teas.

Grand Shirl’s Toy and Doll Museum - Walker Street
Grand Shirl’s has an outstanding display of antique dolls and toys from the 1800s.

Maryborough Heritage Centre - Corner Richmond & Wharf Streets
Trace your family history at the Maryborough Heritage Institute or the Maryborough District Family History Society using traditional and modern technology to record and display links with the past. Detailed maps show routes taken by immigrant ships and follow the trails of settlers as they forged into new territory.

Maryborough City Hall - Kent Street
In the very heart of Maryborough is its most recognisable landmark. The City Hall was erected in 1908 and built in the same grand, colonnade style as Brisbane’s City Hall.
