Out and About |

Everything’s here! The Fraser Coast is the perfect destination for an action-packed adventure or a lazy chill-out. Fabulous Hervey Bay is the whale watching capital of the world, so check out the massive Humpbacks which come right up to the tour boats. Cruise the Great Sandy Straits in a houseboat. Feel the rush of a skydive over Hervey Bay from 10,000 feet. Fly to beautiful Lady Elliot Island (the first island of the Great Barrier Reef) for a day’s snorkelling or catch a boat to Fraser Island to explore the world’s largest sand island with magnificent rain forests. Or you can simply crash out and relax on long, white Shelly Beach, just 50 metres from your front door.
There are so many things to do and see here that you won’t want to leave!
• Experience whale watching up close. Each year from late July through to early November, the mighty humpback whales take time out from their annual migration for a bit of fun in the protected waters of Hervey Bay. There is no better place to experience their antics and their awesome size than close up on a whale-watching cruise. A fleet of vessels provide a selection of whale watching tours during the season and visitors can choose from either a dawn, morning, afternoon, three-quarter-day or full-day tours with informative commentary, marine interpretation, refreshments and lunch depending on the time of tours.
• Explore World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. Fraser is a unique natural environment that has developed over 800,000 years and is one of the rare places where rainforest grows on sand. Pristine freshwater lakes, sparkling, clear creeks, 4-wheel drive circuits and walking tracks and over 325 species of birds, wallabies, echidnas and Australia’s purest population of dingo can all be found on Fraser Island. Access is by tour, 4-wheel drive vehicle, or charter aircraft. Tours depart Hervey Bay.
• Enjoy year-round swimming in warm waters with one of the safest swimming beaches in Queensland – mild temperatures and calm waters protected by Fraser Island.
• Golf at the Hervey Bay Golf and Country Club, just a few blocks away. This challenging 18-hole championship course provides bunkered greens and an excellent practice area. Four other quality golf courses are within the region.
• Tackle some of the best coastal and estuary fishing in Australia or take a fishing charter into deeper waters.
• Cycle along Hervey Bay’s famous Esplanade cycleway.
• Indulge in an exciting range of watersports, including kayaking, jet skiing, glass bottom boat trips, windsurfing, snorkeling, scuba diving and high-speed thrill rides.
• Enjoy joy-flights over Fraser Island and the Great Sandy Strait in a helicopter, light aircraft, a Tiger Moth, or even a microlite.
• See some of the most historical buildings in Queensland. There are museums, art galleries, festivals, craft shops, local markets, local plays and visiting artists all year round. Take Tourist Drive 12 around the Fraser Coast and delight in coastal fishing villages and historic inland towns. It’s hard to beat the history of what was once the second-largest immigration port into Australia.
• Dine at a range of restaurants, cafes and pubs, many just metres from the water. Alfresco waterfront dining is a specialty on the Fraser Coast, with fresh produce in abundance.
• And there’s plenty for the kids to do – giant waterslides, go-karts, mini-golf, beach swimming and lots more.
