The Princess Royal Fortress is Australia's first Federal Fortress, set in heritage park and commands panoramic views of King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour.
The Forts was commissioned in 1893 to protect the strategically valuable port against enemy attack. Two gun batteries were hidden in the Mount Adelaide hillside and a nearby barracks housed a small permanent garrison.
The fortress has been restored and includes a guardhouse, canteen, kitchen site, quarter masters and billeting huts, officers residence, stables site, parade ground and married quarters. There is a depression range finding position, a slit trench and gun emplacements.
