The trails were originally travelled by three foot gauge railways on which wood burning steam trains hauled Karri logs to the sawmill during logging operation carried on in this area in the 1920's. The Karri forest was regenerated in 1928 and the trails are now a very pleasant drive through 70 year old forest.
Big Brook Dam was built in 1986 to supplement the Pemberton town and Trout Hatchery water supply. The area is now a magnificent expanse of water for fishing, swimming, canoeing or sailboarding . Barbecues and a sandy "beach" have been added to make your day at the beach in the forest complete.
Big Brook Dam is part of a 86 kilometre self guiding drive which originates in Pemberton, but can be joined anywhere along the route. You can spend a few days taking an hour or so each day to take in the magic of the forest, mixing the drive in with other things to see and do such as swimming, or stop at some of the wineries and cafe's along the way.
There is a very special four kilometre walk trail around the dam. It has been bitumenised to allow for full wheelchair access with bird hides and fishing platforms. This makes the walk an easy one for prams as well. Further up the Rainbow Trail from the dam is the arboretum. This is an area of eastern states and overseas tree varieties planted over 50 years ago to see how they would survive in this area. There are walk trails and interpretive plaques through the arboretum.
