Sandpatch, with its spectacular views of the Southern Ocean, can be enjoyed from the comfort and safety of recently upgraded boardwalk and lookouts.
It is situated 20 minutes drive from Albany and is also a well-known landmark of the Bibbulmun Track, the state's premier, 1000 kilometre walk trail from Perth hills to Albany.
With a windfarm as a backdrop, the humpbacks can be seen at play as they move along the coast. In shore, and just outside the reef that runs the length of the Sandpatch, is a haunt favoured by the majestic southern right whales.
Sandpatch is one of the land-based whale watching locations detailed in the 'Ocean Giants Lookout Kit', an environmental tourism initiative of The Western Australian Tourism Commission developed in conjunction with The Department of Conservation and Land Management (C.A.L.M). The kit is available from the Albany Visitor Centre, Whaleworld and other local outlets. It includes a map of whale spotting locations, colour photos and information about humpback and southern right whales, a whale sighting card and postcard. All proceeds go to whale conservation.
It is approximately 15 kilometres walk from Albany along the Bibbulmun Track and five kilometres walk to Hidden Valley shelter and campsite.
