This tour takes you westward along Bussell Highway through Meelup, Cape Naturaliste and Canal Rocks heading towards Dunsborough and Yallingup.
Approximately 24 kilometres from Busselton turn right into Cape Naturaliste road to Dunsborough. This is a truly beautiful town with most of the homes overlooking the waters of Geographe Bay. Take a drive around the town, particularly in springtime, as the wildflowers are really beautiful here.
Return to Cape Naturaliste Road, turn right, continue for two kilometres before turning off right to Meelup. A little over one kilometre down this road a turn to the right will give you a deviation of one kilometre to Castle Rock beach, the scene of early whaling days where a cairn has been erected. This is a pleasant beach with an interesting walk to 'castle' rock.
The return to Meelup Road gives you a beautiful view over the bay before the road drops down to Meelup with its white sandy beach and rocks flanking it on both sides. It is one of the loveliest beaches in the area and parking, barbecue, toilet and shower facilities are provided.
Continue on from Meelup past Point Piquet to Eagle Bay where you will find excellent fishing and swimming spots. After passing Eagle Bay, rejoin Cape Naturaliste Road and turn right. Several kilometres on you can turn right into Bunker Bay or continue on to Cape Naturaliste where the lighthouse is situated. There are numerous coastal walk trails throughout this area. Take the time to stop and enjoy a walk, especially in springtime, when wildflowers and whales are plentiful. From the lighthouse, head back towards Dunsborough. Turn off to Sugarloaf Rock approximately two kilometres on your right. This is the only known nesting place south of the Tropic of Capricorn of the Redtailed tropic bird. After viewing Sugarloaf return to Caves Road and turn right towards Yallingup. About two kilometres past Dunsborough on the right is Bannamah Wildlife Park and Country Life Farm, set in natural surroundings.
A few kilometres further on turn into Yallingup Caves Road to the famous Ngilgi (formerly Yallingup) Cave. Toilets and tearooms are provided, plus walk trails through the forest. From the caves continue on to Yallingup and take the drive to the left (near the tennis courts) to view the lovely coastal scenery and Torpedo Rocks.
Return to Caves Road, turn right at the hall, then three kilometres to the Canal Rocks turn off along this section. Return to Caves road, turn right then take the first turn left (approximately 400 metres) into Wildwood Road and a few kilometres turn left again into Commonage Road. Watch for the sign "Happ's Vineyard and Pottery" and "Simmos Icecreamery".
Commonage Road will take you back onto Caves Road where you can return to Dunsborough (left) or Busselton (right). Otherwise, return to Wildwood Road and turn left to Carbunup and left again at Bussell Highway to enjoy a more scenic return route to Busselton.
Minimum time for this tour is half a day, but it would be very easy to extend it out to a whole day by exploring the walk trails and enjoying lunch at one of the many establishments you will pass during your scenic drive.
