- Bungawarra Wines, Ballandean Australia
Bungawarra Winery is one of the oldest vineyards around Stanthorpe (dating back more than 100 years) and was purchased by the Harden family in August 1993. Jeff Harden, a Brisbane pharmacist, had developed a strong interest in wine over many years and became keenly interested in its production. After a lot of reading and attending courses, his wish came true when Bungawarra (the name Bungawarra means Granite Rock by Shallow Water and was first used in 1975) came up for sale. A career change beckoned mightily and he seized his chance. Jeff and his son Tom have run the vineyard since then and for the last four years Jeff has taken on the full weight of the winemaking as well. Success at the various wine shows has followed and a consistent track record established in both white and red wines. Medals won at various wine shows in 2006 were two Gold, six Silver and seven Bronze. Care and persistence have paid off.
Bungawarra is known for its sweet wines as well as these dry ones. The vineyard is planted to seven varieties Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Chardonnay, Semillon, Traminer and the remainder (about an acre) to some very old Muscat vines which make the sweet wines of Bungawarra so distinctive. Everything is done on the estate the fruit is grown, picked, crushed, and made into wine then bottled at Bungawarra.
Expect the 100 per cent boutique winery experience at Bungawarra. Situated in the beautiful Ballandean area of Queenslands Border Highlands with three national parks nearby, Bungawarra is a lovely place to visit and find top quality wines.
