The History Room next to the town library houses a collection of Aboriginal, early settlers, Chinese miners, tin mining, timber mills, boat building, fishing, narrated history, videos and the Burns collection of photographs and books, which was donated to the State in 1985. A feature of the room is a working model at 1/24th scale of the famous Anchor Mine water wheel and stampers. The collection relates primarily to the Portland/Break ODay Municipality but there is a general coverage of the State and the once-thriving tin mining and rural-support areas of Moorina, Welborough, Pyengana, Poimena, Lottah, Goulds Country and Goshen. There is also a comprehensive collection of genealogy of north-east Tasmania. Guided tours in your own car or bus are available.
