The South Arthur Forest is a group of forest reserves in north west Tasmania. Located south of Smithton, the South Arthur Forests includes the Milkshake Hills, Lake Chisolm and Julius River Forest Reserves. You can take the South Arthur Forest Drive—a 130-kilometre loop from Smithton—to explore the area and enjoy its highlights. From Smithton, travel south to the Arthur River and Kanunnah Bridge. Here, you can climb the Sumac Lookout to enjoy dramatic views over the Arthur River and surrounding forest. Continue south east to the Julius River Forest Reserve where you can walk through cool temperate rainforest before visiting the nearby Lake Chisholm Forest Reserve—a flooded limestone sinkhole. Here, a gentle half-hour return walk leads through myrtle forest to the Lake, a wonderful early-morning photography location. Travelling north, you’ll come to the Milkshakes Hills Forest Reserve. Enjoy a picnic among the trees, take a 10-minute loop walk through the rainforest, or climb to the top the Milkshake peaks for fantastic views. Your last stop is at Tayeteya Bridge, a perfect place for fishing, rafting or kayaking the river’s medium rapids. Travel north west through Trowutta to Smithton and the conclusion of your journey.
