The original house on the site was built by Lieutenant Colonel Gibbes, colonial collector of customs, in 1843.
The house, which became known as 'Wotonga', was a graceful single story residence. In 1885 the Colonial
Government purchased Wotonga as the residence for the British Admiral in Command of her Majesty's ships of the Australian Squadron.

The house remained the Admiral's residence until 1913 when the last British Admiral departed - hence the name Admiralty House.
The second story and the colonnaded verandah was added in the mid 1880's. In 1920 the Commonwealth purchased Admiralty House as a residence for the Governor-General. During the depression of the 1930's the house fell into disuse and deep decline. However, since 1936 it has assumed its present role as the Sydney residence of the Governor-General.
