"The hotel with the world’s best view" Australian aviation pioneer Sir Reginald Ansett described the Lufra Hotel at Eaglehawk Neck, on the Tasman Peninsula near Port Arthur, as ’the hotel with the best view in the world." As the person who in 1948 built the second hotel to be named The Lufra on the narrow isthmus which connects the Forestier and Tasman Peninsulas, Sir Reginald knew how important that view would be to a post-war population with the desire to tour the island state. Taking in that same vista south-east over Pirate’s Bay and out into the south Tasman Sea, earlier visitors and inhabitants of the area, may well have seen the sun glinting on the sailing ship "Lufra", as she headed south to enter Storm Bay on her way to Hobart. |
