Stanton Bed and Breakfast,
New Norfolk
504 Back River Road
New Norfolk
The magnificent convict-built country manor, Stanton, was built in 1817. It is situated on one of Tasmania’s first land grants comprising 16 acres (6.5 hectares) of pasture and orchards at Magra, in the heart of the historic and beautiful Derwent Valley. While surrounded by idyllic countryside including mountains, rivers, pasture and orchards, the property is easy to access and only five minutes’ drive from New Norfolk and 35 minutes from Hobart. The walls of Stanton have many stories to tell, the most dramatic happened in 1843 when bushranger Martin Cash and friends arrived, held 16 people at gunpoint in the drawing room. He relieved the house of its valuables, charmed the ladies present, and galloped off into the hills behind the house, where his hideout, Cash’s Cave exists to this day. The house survived bushfires, storms, neglect and potentially the most damaging of all – modernisation. It managed to retain its original simplicity and charm. Stanton has three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The living room, dining room, extensive library, sunroom, verandahs, spa house, licensed cellar, barbecue, gardens and orchards are all available to houseguests. The normal comforts of home are all here - electric heating, tea and coffee making, bar fridge, electric blanket, hair dryer, television, digital video disc player, stereo, but also the things you go on holidays for - beautiful rooms filled with antique furniture, open fires, fresh flowers, wonderful breakfast served on lace cloths and Wedgwood china, silverware and crystal (most importantly, cooked by someone else and with no washing up), and all the time in the world to enjoy the pervading peace and tranquillity of a time past (without the bushrangers!). The owners look forward to sharing their home with you.
