Elsey National Park is a haven for those wanting to relax in warm, crystal clear pools, like exploring historic sites, and who enjoy river fishing and canoeing. The serene Roper River meanders through this picturesque national park, with boat ramp access at 4 Mile and 12 Mile, and fishing being popular at several sites along John Hauser Drive. The park also has a rich heritage and was the setting for the Jeannie Gunn’s ‘We of the Never Never’.

From John Hauser Drive, investigate historical sites such as the Old Sheep Dip, part of the Territory’s rich pastoral history, World War II Aboriginal Army Camp and 12 Mile Yards. Or take the Botanic Walk, an easy 1.5 kilometre loop and marvel at the park’s diverse plant species. Or try the more invigorating eight kilometre return walk to Korowan / Mataranka Falls, where you can follow the Roper River down to the ‘tufa dams’ and cool off in the cool gentle rapids. Enjoy a picnic and a refreshing swim at Mulurark, or pause for a spot of fishing at Wabalarr.

The thermal pools are well-known feature of the park. Rainbow Spring rises from underground at 300 litres per second at a temperature of 33 degrees Celsius, which is then contained in a relaxing swimming pool surrounded by a paperbark and palm forest. Bitter Springs is also close by, and Stevie’s Hole, a waterhole not warmed by the springs, is a little further along the Waterhouse River.

The park is accessed from three directions near Mataranka - via the Stuart Highway to Martin Road, off the Stuart Highway on to Homestead Road and via Homestead Road through to John Hauser Drive. There are several camping areas within the park, some with barbecues and picnic tables supplied, and accommodation and camping is available at the Mataranka Homestead.

It may also be inaccessible at times due to flooding between November and April.
