Wongabel protects a remnant of the endangered mabi forest, less than two per cent of which now remains. In 1903, red cedar seedlings were planted in the forest to replace mature trees which had been logged. Commercial plantations of hoop, kauri and Caribbean pine grow beside native forest.
Enjoy a 655 metre walk through the forest or take the longer 2.2 kilometre route. Interpretive signs tell of the area's history, as well as forestry practices and local ecology. Both tracks are wheelchair accessible, but assistance may be required for the longer walk. Go spotlighting at night and look for Lumholtz's tree-kangaroos and many different possums. Braille booklets and audio headsets are available from the visitor centre in Atherton.
