Greenmount Homestead was officially re-opened on October 27th 2001 after an extensive restoration project made possible with Commonwealth Government Assistance under the Federation Cultural and Heritage Projects Program under the Federation Fund.
The late Mrs Dorothy Coo 'desirous of perpetuating the memory of the said John Cook and his descendants' gifted the Homestead (built in 1915) to the people of Mackay in 1984.
Greenmount Homestead, as a museum, is rather unusual. It's vast collection comes from three generations of the Cook family, prominent pioneers of the Pioneer Valley, whose contribution has helped shape the cultural, heritage and economic future of the region. And quite unique too, is that tours of the Homestead are conducted by a living legacy to the past Gloria Arrow who was housekeeper for Tom and Dorothy Cook since she was 16 years old and remains as caretaker and tour guide today.
The homestead was permanently listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1993, recognising the enormous significance of this place. It is also recognised as an Integrated Historic Home Collection of national significance.
The Homestead is open to visitors daily, please phone to arrange a visit. The Homestead has disability access.
