The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens was opened May 2003, and is a picturesque landscape overlooking an extensive lagoon, showcasing the unique, diverse and spectacular vegetation of the central coast region.
Meandering along the banks of Eulamere Lagoon, once the main channel of the Pioneer River, the gardens interpret many of the natural physical features of the area, with spectacular landforms accessed by a system of pathways, ramps and bridges. Boardwalks span sections of the lagoon to allow close interpretation of wetland species and newly-created wildlife habitats. The diverse cultural heritage of the city is celebrated in specialised gardens displaying the plants of the South Sea Islands, Aboriginal cultures, Torres Strait Islands, Maltese and Japanese peoples.
The very best and most spectacular plants of the region have been displayed along the orientation walkway that is the main approach to the Visitor Centre. The petals and stamens of the orchid flower were the inspiration for the design of this unique building that is sited high above the slopes of the lagoon, which provide views and vistas from the observation deck, some 10 metres above water level. Adjacent to this area is the Eungella Cloud Garden where a climate-modified, three-dimensional garden displays the unique plants found along the tops of the coastal ranges.
An extensive pathway will link all of the garden areas and a bikeway network has been designed to provide access for all.
